India's GDP growth numbers

                                                                India's GDP growth

Indian economy slumps to 7-year low, GDP growth slows to 5% - The Week

The recently released quarterly GDP growth numbers for the first quarter of FY2020-21 should alarm us all. The 23.9 percent contraction in India compares with a drop of 12.4 percent in Italy and 9.5 percent in the United States, two of the most COVID-affected advanced countries.

Yet India is even worse off than these comparisons suggest. The pandemic is still raging in India, so discretionary spending, especially on high-contact services like restaurants, and the associated employment, will stay low until the virus is contained. Government-provided relief becomes all the more important. This has been meager; primarily free food grains to poor households; and credit guarantees to banks for lending to small and medium firms, where the take down has been patchy. The government’s reluctance to do more today seems partly because it wants to conserve resources for a possible future stimulus. This strategy is self-defeating.

India GDP: GDP Truth: No, India didn't do better than US did - The Economic Times

If you think of the economy as a patient, relief is the sustenance the patient needs while on the sickbed and fighting the disease. Without relief, households skip meals, pull their children out of school and send them to work or beg, pledge their gold to borrow, let EMIs and rent arrears pile up…Similarly, without relief, small and medium firms – think of a small restaurant -- stop paying workers, let debt pile up, or close permanently.

In addition to borrowing, it should prepare public sector firm shares for on- tap sale, to take advantage of every period of market buoyancy. The current period of buoyancy already looks like a missed opportunity. Many government and public sector entities have surplus land in prime urban areas, and those too should be readied for sale. Even if sales do not take place immediately, preparations for sale, as well as an announced time table, will give bond markets greater conviction the government is serious about restoring fiscal stability.

India's GDP growth cut to 6.9% by CRISIL; these 3 key concerns weigh - The Financial Express

Turning to government spending, the key will be to prioritize. MNREGA is a tried and tested means of providing rural relief and should be replenished as needed. Given the length of the pandemic, more direct cash transfers to the poorest households, especially in urban areas that do not have access to MNREGA, is warranted. The government and public sector firms should clear their payables quickly so that liquidity moves to corporations. In addition, small firms below a certain size could be rebated the corporate income and GST tax they paid last year , with the rebate tapering off with firm size. This would be an objective way of helping small viable firms based on a hard-to-manipulate metric, even while rewarding them for their honesty. Finally, the government will likely have to set aside resources to recapitalize public sector banks as the extent of losses are recognized.

The private sector should also be urged to give a helping hand. Cash-rich platforms like Amazon, Reliance, and Walmart could help smaller suppliers get back on their feet, even funding some of them. All large firms should be incentivized to clear their receivables quickly.

SWADESHI MANDI VIDEO - Bengal's Golden Fiber- JUTE

SWADESHI MANDI VIDEO

Swadeshi, as a strategy, was a key focus of Mahatma Gandhi, who described it as the soul of Swaraj (self rule). It was strongest in Bengal and was also called the Vandemataram movement in India.

A very significant instrument of social change, in Gandhi’s view, was the precept and practice of swadeshi, which implied self-reliance and self-sufficiency at the level of the individual, the village and the nation.

By following the swadeshi principle, the nation’s confidence and prosperity could be assured. It would be appropriate to quote him on the rule of swadeshi: “Swadeshi is that spirit in us which restricts us to the use and service of our immediate surroundings to the exclusion of the more remote.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We bring the Swadeshi Mandi concept where we promote the indigenous trades of India. I hail from Kolkata the city of Joy and therefore I promote the indigenous jute industry here. It is a perfect replacement for toxic plastic. From clothes to accessories to masks (see image below) - jute can be used to make anything and everything in an eco-friendly and biodegradable manner because businesses have to adopt a mechanism to support the sustainability of our own planet Earth. With the help of the Maha Mandi event which is going virtual this year- we are getting into the game by trying digital marketing and learning it - hands on!

Shifting from Just In Time to Just In Case

Below are the crucial components of a "Just in Case" supply chain

Simplicity : Simplify the supply chain - outsource the activities which are not core to the business.

Resilience : Produce closer to the market where you have to sell - keep inventory of products which are high demand and essential.

                                     7 Keys to Developing Resilience

Redundancy : To avoid disruptions from unpredictable factors, always have a back up plan for your supply chain to fall back on.

                                         Is it really Redundancy?

Innovation : From same day delivery to 3D Printing, innovations have a wide spectrum and are key changers of the supply chain profitability.

Four Ways to Get Your Innovation Unit to Work

Post COVID-19, industries will be forced to look forward and beyond JIT.

They will have to look for-

  • Diversification of supplier bases as a shield against geographical uncertainties
  • Reconfiguration of warehouses to limit supply disruptions
  • Increased automation in warehouses to build resilience
We don't know yet how the future will look but we know for sure technology is going to take a bigger share for high traceability in the supply chain. May be JIC or JIT or JIT+JIC hybrid model will be the new normal.

Business Communication Insights from the co-founder of techdarwin.com - Mr.Nikhil Kulkarni

Business Communication Insights:

Mr. Nikhil Kulkarni is the co-founder of Darwin Tech (www.techdarwin.com); a travel technology B2B startup - which works on products for the leisure holiday market.

After working with KPMG for 11 years he decided to tread the path of an entrepreneur. India needs such entrepreneurs to fulfill the vision of self reliance.

NITIE's Maha Mandi 2020 event has a central theme which is also about instilling the entrepreneur skill in a student and how effectively we use the virtual tools to communicate about our business effectively.

The key agendas discussed by Mr. Nikhil Kulkarni were:

  • Business Communication in Consulting
  • Structuring your content — Pyramid Principle
  • Creating Impact — Tips & Tricks
  • Creating a 'Personal Brand' — why, how, when?
  • Ask me Anything!

Following were the important points discussed by him:
1) As you proceed in business, Relationship becomes more important than communications.
These relations are initially built through effective communication.
2) Proposals, reports, executive briefing, detailed project report and work papers:
they are prepared using Word, Excel and Powerpoint and are key to effective communication.
3) Executive briefing - summary of a report must not be sent to clients as the report itself.
4) The Pyramid Principle
-Objective of the document must be crystal clear before preparing it
-The audience of the pitch has to be understood :
the one who wants to get it implemented (cost, efforts and outcome) and
the one who has to implement (help in growth)
-Context in which content is consumed :
are all aspects of the problem covered and
are they mutually exclusive and collectively exhaustive (MCME).

5) Use hierarchical structure to organize ideas and maintain flow of information
Key message -> Supporting Argument -> Idea/Data/Fact/Logic (MCME) -> Summarizing
6) Include activity or short videos, use pictures along with text.
7) Creating a personal brand is important : large impact :
have a Blog, YouTube channel, Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.

The Launch of Maha Mandi - going virtual this year

Be the torch bearer amidst the mess, when people and businesses are losing direction because of the crashing economy - we have to dare to step out and be an entrepreneur.

Maha Mandi is a one of its kind event held by NITIE every year. It is also recognized as a unique educational initiative. NITIE received award for innovation for this program.

In the words of Dr T Prasad faculty at NITIE and brainchild of the event: Maha Mandi helps otherwise classroom groomed students to practice their business skills by real time selling and exposure to market.

On the occasion of 74th Independence Day, NITIE inaugurated Swadeshi Mandi digitally. This event was joined by several dignitaries including our Director Prof. Manoj Tiwari, NITIE faculty members, and chief guest from the Ministry of HRD.

Today we got the chance to hear

  1. Shri Abhay Jere – Chief Innovation Officer, Ministry of HRD, Govt. Of India
  2. Madam Apeksha; founder of “Zyka Ka Tadka”

The world economy is set to contract to an extent which is happening once in a century. Shri Abhay Jere discussed about Aatmanirbahar Bharat. This crisis has taught us the value of local products, we need to be self-reliant and promote local products for boosting India's economy.

Employing people instead of being employed is the need of the hour. To achieve the $ 5 trillion economy, we all need to play a big role in it.

Madam Apeksha graduated from NITIE in 2007, later joined P&G. She left the job to follow her passion and started the “Zyka Ka Tadka” a cooking tutorial on youtube. Today she has more than 4 lakh subscribers on the channel. On her channel, the most-watched video has 31 lakh views.

Instead of seeking shelter under other’s umbrella, hold your umbrella, and offer shelter to others.

For having a start-up we don’t need a big investment and super ideas, ideas are everywhere around us. Miss Apeksha started Zyka ka Tadka with only Rs 30,000, we need to give a start to our idea.

Crisis and pandemics often teach us that the job market is volatile, it can turn around anytime.

We need to start selling and promoting local products, jobs are diminishing and start-ups are call of the hour.
